NAFLDisanabnormalbuildupofextrafatinlivercellsthatisnotcausedbyalcohol.Thedisease-whichaffectsupto25percentoftheU.S.population-usuallydevelopsinpeoplewhoareoverweight,obese8orhavediabetes9andhighcholesterol10.Thefirststageofthedisease,hepaticsteatosis,canprogresstoaconditioncalledNASH(non-alcoholicsteatohepatitis)andultimatelycirrhosisorlivercancer.

TimchenkosaidnewtherapiesforNAFLDareneededbecause,shortofweightlossandlifestylechanges,therecurrentlyarenosafeoreffectivetreatments.Therearenewtreatmentsbeingtestedinclinicaltrialswithpromising11results,butthesestudieshaverevealedevidenceofserioussideeffects.
